Turquoise waters, cascading waterfalls, lush coastal primary forests, and pristine tropical beaches are just a few of the natural wonders you’ll find on the Osa, described by National Geographic as one of the most “biologically intense” places on earth.
The Osa’s high level of biological diversity coupled with its unique combination of distinct tropical ecosystems (13 in all) have made it a high global conservation priority.
Friends of the Osa (FOO) – Amigos de Osa – was founded in 2003 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a goal to preserve the Osa peninsula’s globally significant biodiversity. FOO maintains a small office in Washington, D.C. with larger staff based on the Osa Peninsular – in Puerto Jimenez, Costa Rica.
Our vision:
To maintain a largely forested landscape surrounded by an intact coastal zone that protects the Osa’s unparalleled wealth of biodiversity while supporting sustainable human livelihoods.
Our Mission:
We achieve our goals as an effective, agile, and self-sustaining organization that works in conjunction with partners to:
- promote land stewardship;
- enhance the scientific understanding of tropical ecosystems and apply learnings to conservation;
- provide education and training for future generations; and
- enhance the quality of life for local communities living on the Osa.
