Alvaro Ugalde with guide Arturo Jarquin

Alvaro Ugalde is a noted Costa Rican conservation leader. His career with the park service of Costa Rica spans more than 30 years, and he served as the National Park Service Director from 1974-1986 and then from 1991-1993 . He received his Bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of Costa Rica and a Masters of Science in Natural Resources from the University of Michigan. He has received awards from the Nature Conservancy, the J. Paul Getty Wildlife Conservation Award of the WWF, Prince Bernard of the Netherlands, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the Costa Rican government and several local organizations. In 1999, he was named an "Environmental Leader of the Century" by Time magazine in a special issue on Leaders of the Millennium for Latin America. According to Time: "Two men are responsible for (Costa Rica's) conservation: Mario Boza and Alvaro Ugalde."

Señor Ugalde is also the founder of several non-governmental conservation organizations in Costa Rica and has participated in supporting conservation efforts in other nations of Central and South America.

He recently changed positions from the head the Environmental Program of the Costa Rica-USA Foundation for Cooperation and returned to his first love the National Park Service and Acosa.
