TRIP 1: DECEMBER 17-22, 2011
Osa Peninsula Holiday Birding Tour
(Culminating in the National Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count)
Spend your holiday birding in the tropics! This trip is designed to immerse you in one of the world's most spectacular tropical forests and prepare you to participate in the longest running wildlife census assessing the health of bird populations in the Americas—The Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird Count. In addition to five exciting days of birding, you will gain an in-depth understanding of Avian ecology and conservation issues in the Osa. The Osa has been designated a Costa Rican Important Bird Area (IBA), an Endemic Bird Area (EBA) by Birdlife International, and is considered a global conservation priority. Don't miss this incredible opportunity to give the gift of avian conservation! For more information and trip itinerary click here.
TRIP 2: MARCH 3-10, 2012
Osa Peninsula Spring Birdathon
More than half of North America’s 650+ species of breeding birds migrate to Latin America each year. On their journey to and from the continental U.S., protection of their breeding, wintering, and stopover habitats is critical to their long-term survival.
The Osa Peninsula Birdathon is a unique, fun, and effective conservation strategy that allows you to travel to the tropics, observe amazing birds, and be proactive in conservation—not only for migratory birds, but for the resident avifauna and myriad other species dependant on these landscapes. Your participation in Osa’s Spring Birdathon truly makes a difference.
Why is there such a need to focus on habitat protection in the Osa? Projections of growth and development throughout Central America show great increase in the very near future, causing further habitat loss and destruction. It is imperative that protection of wintering habitat for migratory and resident bird species begins now.
Birdathon participants raise funds simply by asking friends, family, colleagues, etc., to sponsor them. The funds raised assist Osa Conservation in the vital protection of habitat for our feathered friends. Raising additional funds is not a requirement, and there is no minimum collection amount; nonetheless, the more funds raised, the more we can help protect the critically important ecosystems of the Osa. As always, donations are 100% tax deductible.
We hope you will join us on this unforgettable experience.

ABOUT OSA CONSERVATION BIRDING TRIPS
The Osa Peninsula is a region with a lot of biological superlatives squeezed into a very modest area. Home to the largest remaining tract of tropical lowland rainforest and intact mangrove ecosystem on the Pacific Coast of Central America, one of only four tropical fjords on earth, with an expansive untouched coastline, the Osa Peninsula is the wildest and most spectacular region of Costa Rica. The Osa harbors over 400 species of birds, including the healthiest population of Scarlet Macaws in Central America, Red-capped Manakins, Yellow-billed and Turquoise Cotingas, and even the Harpy Eagle. Despite this extreme biological diversity, the Peninsula’s remoteness has left it the most underbirded corner of the country.
OC’s birding trips are designed to make this unique geography accessible and offer an unparalleled birding experience. You will have a chance to see many endemic species, which are limited in range to the Osa and western Panama, such as the Charming Hummingbird, White-crested Coquette, Baird’s Trogon, Fiery-billed Aracari, Golden-naped Woodpecker… the list goes on. On top of the incredible birding, visitors to the Osa have the opportunity to observe all four of the country’s monkey species, sloths, anteaters, pumas, jaguars, tapir, and amphibians, not to mention some amazing tropical flora.
All OC conservation birding trips are lead by our resident ornithologist, Karen Leavelle, as well as trained naturalist guides who are intimately familiar with the bird species and tropical ecosystems of Osa. Each trip includes intense birding, forest hikes, and nightly talks and presentations by our staff of biologists and conservation professionals. Topics will include natural history, sea turtle conservation, wild cat conservation, avian research and conservation, reforestation, climate change and community engagement. Participation also directly supports OC’s avian conservation and education programs. We welcome you to be part of our mission to conserve the peninsula’s globally significant biodiversity and we hope to see you on one of these fantastic trips!
